School-based Roles

It takes many high-quality staff, both instructional and non-instructional, to create the academic environment that our students deserve at their campuses.

Below are descriptions of our school-based roles.

Classroom Teachers

Classroom Teachers have multiple years of experience supporting students like ours to outstanding, quantified academic growth. At the Kindergarten through Third-Grade level they teach all subjects to a single classroom. In Fourth through Eighth Grade they teacher departmentalized subjects.

They have:

  • A bachelor’s degree (required)
  • At least two years’ experience as a classroom teacher in communites similar to ours (required)
  • Tests that demonstrate compliance with Illinois Charter Law (required)
  • Illinois teacher license (preferred)

Co-Teacher

At the Kindergarten level, each Classroom Teacher works alongside a Co-Teacher. Co-Teachers share responsibility for planning and instruction with the Classroom Teacher. They are not assistant teachers. They plan and deliver both whole-group and small-group instruction under their supervision of the more experienced Classroom Teacher. Oftentimes, Co-Teachers are novices looking for their first teaching jobs, have prior experience only in pre-Kindergarten or childcare, or are transitioning from serving in communities different from ours

They have:

  • A bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Tests that demonstrate compliance with Illinois Charter Law (required)
  • Illinois teacher license (preferred)

Diverse Learners Teachers

Diverse Learners Teachers instruct students with IEPs through pushing-in to general education classrooms or pulling small groups of students out for instruction in a resource room.

They have:

  • A bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Illinois teacher license with LBS 1 endorsement (required)
  • Prior experience working with students in communities like ours (preferred)

Teaching Fellows

The structural obstacles to teacher preparation and licensure are many and disproportionately prevent low-income people of color from becoming teachers. As part of our commitment to serving low-income students and families of color, KIPP Chicago seeks to draw more talented, committed people into the teaching profession through our Teaching Fellows role. This is a role for those at the very initial stages of their careers in education. The role is ideal for those who have studied in another field and are looking to make a transition into teaching, those who are in an alternative licensure program like Teach for America, or those who have recently graduated from a teacher preparation program and are looking for their first classroom position. Student Support Personnel

Student Support Personnel work alongside Diverse Learners Teachers and students with IEPs. Paraprofessionals, Psychologists, Nurses, Speech and Language Pathologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists all provide vital supports to our students. All Student Support Personnel positions require Illinois licensure appropriate to their roles. See individual postings for other requirements.

Excellence Teachers

Excellence Teachers instruct students in arts and culture. The specific subjects offered at each campus vary according to each school leader’s vision. Historically, Excellence Teachers have taught Physical Education, Art, Music, Choir, Music Theatre, Dance, Hip-Hop, and Theatre.

They have:

  • A bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Tests that demonstrate compliance with Illinois Charter Law (required)
  • Illinois teacher license (preferred)
  • At least two years’ experience as a teacher in a community like ours (preferred)

Operations Staff

The operations at each campus are directed by a Director of Operations, who sits on the leadership team with the principal and assistant principals and is supported by an Office Manager.

High School Transition Coordinator

The High School Transition Coordinator is part of our KIPP Through College team. They work with the 7th and 8th graders at a single middle school campus, supporting them and their families through the high school application and selection process.
